The great state of Alaska is the forty-ninth state to join the United States of America, but this isn’t the only momentous occasion in Alaska’s history. Alaska has a long, rich history of culture and events that have affected its people, the US, and the rest of the world. That very influence still has a strong impact today. But how did Alaska get to where it is? During this one-semester course, we’ll discover Alaska’s history and culture through examining: Alaska’s physical geography, its first nation groups, Russia’s impact, life as a US territory and state, the gold rush, oil influence, Native land claims and ANCSA, Alaska today, and several other important topics. Throughout the semester, students will be challenged by projects, daily activities, group assignments, presentations, and research reports that help illustrate the diversity and uniqueness Alaska contributes to the world.
